In recent years, there have been some incredible advancements in cosmetic dentistry. As a result, various issues that may have previously resulted in tooth loss can often now be solved through a range of other treatment options.

Dental crowns are one such example and can provide a fantastic solution for a tooth that is worn, cracked or discoloured. Crowns can also be used to support a weak tooth, plus hold dental appliances such as a bridge in place.

Cromer House is a leading destination for dental crowns in Liverpool.

In this guide, we’ll give you an overview of what to expect when you get a dental crown.

What is a dental crown?

A dental crown is the dentistry equivalent of placing a hat over your natural tooth. In other words, a dental crown encapsulates the natural tooth underneath with a tooth-like structure which sits on top. The purpose of a dental crown is to give the tooth the ability to look and function like a real tooth.

Made from either composite, porcelain or metal, dental crowns may be considered when the natural tooth has experienced damage or decay.

In some cases, a dental crown is also used to provide an anchor to hold a dental bridge in place.

When is a dental crown required?

A dental crown can be a viable option in several scenarios. Usually, there is a need to protect the tooth from further damage, ensure the tooth can support a dental bridge or improve the appearance of the tooth.

Some examples of when a crown may be needed include:

  • Protecting a weak tooth from damage or decay
  • Covering dental implants
  • Following root canal treatment
  • To support a dental bridge
  • To perform cosmetic modifications to the tooth

Crucially, dental crowns aren’t the only solution to solve the above issues. However, they can be warranted when the existing tooth structure requires more extensive repairs or modifications than other treatment options can provide.

The process for a dental crown

Preparing the tooth

Tooth preparation for dental crowns will usually happen over two appointments.

During the first appointment, your dentist will remove any of the decayed, damaged or weakened parts of the tooth.

Your dentist will numb the area surrounding the tooth so that the process remains as comfortable as possible.

The tooth will be gently buffed into a new shape so that a crown can securely fit on top.

We will then take an impression of the tooth. This is so we can make you a dental crown that will offer a custom fit.

Before you leave, we’ll fit a temporary crown. This will remain in place until your permanent crown is ready to be placed.

Fitting the crown

You will return to our practice a couple of weeks later to have the temporary crown removed and the permanent crown fitted in its place.

Since your dental crowns have been made just for you, they will offer a precise fit. Our dentist will then simply need to cement your crown into place to complete your treatment.

The process of fitting a dental crown is usually quick and straightforward since all of the preparation will have been done during your first appointment.

However, before you leave we will ensure everything is looking as it should and that most importantly you are happy with the finished result!

Aftercare

Following a temporary or permanent dental crown placement, you will need to take extra care as the area may be sensitive for a few days.

For the first 48 hours, you should avoid eating foods that are difficult to chew along with sticky foods.

In general, it’s good to maintain some self-awareness about your bite pressure and overall eating habits with a crown. While a dental crown is designed to look and function like a natural tooth, being mindful about looking after your dental crown can help prolong its lifespan.

For instance, using your teeth to open packages, smoking or vaping should all be avoided.

It is also imperative to follow a diligent oral hygiene routine to keep your mouth healthy. With a dental crown, you will also need to adopt a careful flossing technique.

Is a dental crown right for me?

Depending on the issue you are experiencing, a dental crown may be either the best or one of many options we can provide.

For instance, a cracked tooth can sometimes be repaired using composite bonding. Likewise, veneers can cover the visible portion of the tooth if the issue is purely cosmetic.

The best way to determine if a crown is right for you is to visit us for a consultation. That’s because not only are there endless concerns that a dental crown can be used to address, but also various potential treatment options depending on the nature of your issue.

In general, a dental crown is a good option when complete coverage of the visible portion of the tooth is required.

So long as you commit to looking after your dental crown, it should provide you with around 10 years of longevity. That said, you should be willing to commit to regular dental visits to check the integrity of your crown.

Also, you will need to replace your crown once your existing crown has reached the end of its lifespan.
