Signs You May Need A Root Canal
- Pain that lingers after something hot or cold, rather than fading straight away
- Pain when you bite down or touch the tooth
- A dull ache that wakes you at night
- A small pimple or boil on the gum near the tooth, which may weep
- Swelling in the gum, jaw or face on one side
- A tooth that has gone darker than the ones next to it
Not every case hurts. Some are picked up on a routine X-ray before there are any symptoms, which is why we take an X-ray at the assessment rather than going on how the tooth feels.
What an infected tooth will not do is settle by itself. Left alone it tends to worsen and can form an abscess, so it is worth getting looked at rather than waiting to see. If you are in pain now, ring us. An emergency appointment is £95 and includes a diagnostic X-ray, so you leave knowing what is wrong and what it will cost to put right.

What Does Root Canal Treatment Involve?
Most root canals take between sixty and ninety minutes, across one or two visits.
- Assessment and X-ray. We check the tooth, take an X-ray and confirm whether the nerve is infected or dying. You get the full cost in writing before anything starts.
- Numbing. The tooth and the gum around it are fully numbed, so you should feel pressure and movement but not pain. Most people say it feels much like having a filling. We check you are numb before we begin.
- Cleaning the canals. A thin rubber sheet is placed over the tooth to keep it clean and dry, then a small opening is made in the top. The infected tissue is removed and each canal is cleaned and shaped. This is the part the microscope matters for, because the canals are narrow and easy to miss.
- Filling and sealing. The cleaned canals are filled and sealed so bacteria cannot get back in. If it takes more than one visit, a temporary filling protects the tooth in between.

What Affects Root Canal Costs?
It comes down to how many canals the tooth has. A front tooth usually has one. A molar at the back often has three or four, each of which has to be found, cleaned and sealed individually, so it takes longer. Retreating a root canal done elsewhere costs more because the old filling material has to be removed before we can start.
What the price includes: The treatment itself, across however many visits it takes to finish. The consultation and X-ray are £100, charged separately, and a crown afterwards is separate again.
Crowns: Crowns start at £625 for a metal based crown and £795 to £845 for a tooth coloured one. We will tell you at the assessment whether your tooth needs one, so there is no surprise later.
NHS: Root canal treatment is also available on the NHS as a Band 2 treatment. Ask us and we will tell you which route applies to your tooth.
Finance: Finance is available if you would rather spread the cost.
