What is a crown?
Dental crowns are placed over a natural tooth to replicate the look and function of the tooth. Created from either metal, ceramic or porcelain, a dental crown is custom made for the individual tooth based on scans and impressions.
Once a crown is placed by our expert Liverpool dental team, it provides full coverage of the natural tooth surface underneath, meaning the tooth underneath is no longer visible. This also works to protect the natural tooth, including if it is weak or damaged.
Providing an alternative to having the tooth extracted, dental crowns look to preserve the natural tooth in a way that also won’t leave it vulnerable to further damage. In addition, dental crowns can also be used to hold a dental bridge in place.
How do crowns work?
The easiest way to describe how crowns work is to think of a crown as a cover for the tooth. That’s because a crown is designed to sit on top of the natural tooth down to the gumline, which is also why dental crowns are often referred to as tooth caps.
For the tooth to be able to hold a crown in place, it will need to be prepared which involves filling the tooth down. Often, this is necessary because the existing tooth is weak, damaged or needs to support a bridge.
Dental crowns can be made from metal, porcelain or ceramic. They are not only designed to mimic the look of a real tooth, but most importantly provide the functionality of the tooth, depending on where it is positioned in the mouth.
Two appointments at our Liverpool dental clinic are required to prepare your tooth and fit your permanent crown.

Dental Crowns FAQs
Do you have any questions about getting a dental crown in Liverpool?
We’ve answered some top questions that our patients commonly ask us. However, if you’d like to speak to us about anything else relating to dental crowns, please get in touch with us.
Do crowns hurt?
The process of getting dental crowns doesn’t hurt, because you will be given local anaesthetic and a numbing agent for the gum prior to your treatment. Your dentist will also check you are happy before and during the procedure to ensure your comfort.
Following the tooth preparation and crown fitting, it is normal to experience some gum tenderness or general sensitivity. This should subside within a few days, and you can take over the counter pain relief if you need to.
If you do feel apprehensive about getting dental crowns or any other dental treatment, please speak to your dentist. We want to ensure you have a great experience with us, so let us know if you have any questions about what to expect.
What are crowns made of?
Dental crowns can be made from a number of materials. At Cromer House, we offer metal dental crowns along with Zirconia and Emax dental crowns.
As you might expect, every crown material offers something different in terms of its strength, durability, appearance and overall usage suitability.
Emax is a type of porcelain crown which is ideal for front teeth where we want to achieve a high aesthetic appeal.
Zirconia is a ceramic material that offers additional strength for the teeth towards the back of the mouth which need to be able to withstand the demands of chewing.
Metal crowns also offer the benefit of being exceptionally strong, although have a visible difference owing to the fact they are not tooth coloured like porcelain or ceramic crowns.
When you visit us for a consultation, your dentist will be more than happy to run you through all the options so that we can select the best material for your crown.
How long does the dental crown procedure take?
The entire process of getting a dental crown takes 2-3 weeks. This timeframe covers your initial consultation, along with two further appointments with us in Liverpool that will be needed to prepare your tooth and fit your crown.
If you decide to go ahead with a dental crown following a consultation with one of our dentists, you’ll attend a first crown appointment. This is the longer of the two appointments, and involves taking scans and impressions of the tooth. The tooth will also be prepared so that it is able to accept a crown. You’ll be given a temporary crown to wear while your permanent crown is being made.
It can take a couple of weeks to make your permanent crown, owing to crowns being custom made exactly for your tooth. However, the second appointment to fit the crown is much shorter, and shouldn’t take more than 30 minutes to complete.
How much do dental crowns cost?
The cost of dental crowns will depend on the type of material you opt for.
Our metal based semi precious crowns are priced from £625. Emax and Zirconia crowns are priced from £795.
Additionally, we also offer crown recementing from £130. This is a treatment where we reattach a loose crown that is otherwise in good condition. We will also give the crown and the surrounding teeth a good clean to promote the overall health and longevity of your crown.
