Composite bonding provides a quick and highly transformative treatment option for several cosmetic dental concerns. Commonly, this includes issues such as misshapen teeth, cracked teeth or gaps between teeth.

Offering a fully customisable treatment, the colour and overall style of the composite bonding can also be tailored to the preferences of the patient.

However, as with all types of cosmetic dental treatments, composite bonding has a lifespan that patients need to be mindful of.

Cromer House Dental Practice is a leading provider of composite bonding across the Liverpool area.

Learn from our dentists about how long composite bonding lasts, plus the key factors which can affect the longevity of the results.

How long does composite bonding last?

Composite bonding involves sculpting and curing layers of composite onto the surface of your teeth. Once the composite is cured under a light, it takes just a few seconds to set into place.

On average, you can expect your composite bonding results to last between 5 to 8 years. However, with the right approach to aftercare, it is also possible that your results may last even longer.

In many ways, the fact that composite bonding is not permanent is actually seen as a huge advantage. As a completely non-invasive process, composite bonding involves adding material to the tooth to create the desired shape, rather than filing down the tooth as is the case with composite veneers. This means if you change your mind in the future, desire a different style or even want to explore another treatment option, your composite bonding can be removed.

What affects the longevity of bonding?

As with all cosmetic dental treatments, there are many factors which can impact the longevity of your results. However, the good news is that by researching these before you go ahead with composite bonding, you can get your treatment off to the best possible start.

First of all, the approach by the dentist including the technique and quality of materials used is important. Crucially, there are many options for where to get dental work done these days. However, only if you head to a dental practice that is UK regulated can you be sure your treatment is in the right hands.

Once you have had your composite bonding performed by a professional, the rest of the work is on you to ensure you look after your beautiful new smile.

If you have your composite bonding performed with us here at Cromer House Dental Practice, we will give you a list of aftercare steps to follow.

By listening to our advice and coming back to see us regularly for checkups and professional cleans, your composite bonding has the best chance of lasting for as long as possible.

How to make your bonding last longer

Following a diligent dental hygiene routine can go a long way in prolonging your composite bonding, not to mention promoting your oral health as a whole.

We recommend that you clean your teeth twice a day using an electric toothbrush and fluoride toothpaste. You should also be flossing daily, and visiting us regularly for a professional dental clean.

Since composite is not as strong as natural teeth, you will need to take extra steps to protect your results. This includes avoiding hard or sticky foods and making sure you cut food into small pieces especially any foods that are difficult to chew.

Be aware that habits such as using your teeth as tools (i.e. to bite sellotape), chewing fingernails, teeth grinding and smoking can all damage composite bonding.

However, if you do happen to be a teeth grinder (bruxism) speak to us about getting a night guard to protect your teeth including any composite bonding work you are thinking of getting done.

Visiting your dentist regularly for checkups is recommended regardless of whether you have

composite bonding or not. Crucially, each visit gives us a chance to check the condition of any teeth that have had composite bonding applied.

Signs of wear and time to replace

With the 5 to 8 year average lifespan in mind, you will get a sense of when your composite bonding is due to be removed and redone so that you can maintain the look of your smile.

However, there may be warning signs that can appear at any time following a composite bonding treatment that will require a professional evaluation from one of our dentists.

The more noticeable signs that your composite bonding needs replacing or repairing include any cracks or chips that have appeared in the tooth. Depending on your treatment approach, you may also have exposed tooth roots which the composite bonding previously covered.

If the tooth becomes decayed, the composite may also have to be replaced once the infected portion of the tooth has been removed.

In terms of general wear and tear, you may notice the surface of the composite has changed and now feels much rougher. This can suggest your composite bonding is nearing the end of its lifespan.

If you already have composite bonding and you notice any of the above signs, or if it has been a few years since you had the treatment done, then it’s time for a check up.

Sometimes, minor touch-ups can be performed to the composite meaning a removal and replacement isn’t always necessary. However, visiting us in person is the best way to make sure everything is looking great.
