What is a dental emergency?
A dental emergency is a dental problem that requires urgent attention from a dental pratitioner. This can be due to extreme pain, dental trauma, swelling, bleeding or infection.
The following issues are considered a dental emergency:
- Cracked or broken tooth
- Dental abscess
- Lost or broken dental restorations (i.e. lost fillings or a dislodged crown)
- Severe or persistent toothache
- Uncontrolled bleeding due to dental trauma or following an extraction
- Loose tooth
- Facial swelling
- Knocked out tooth
- Signs of infection

The NHS Dental Advice line can also be reached on 0161 476 9651 (for residents of Merseyside & Cheshire).
Our opening hours are 9am to 6pm on Monday – Thursday, and 8am to 3pm on Fridays. We are closed on weekends.
The cost for a private emergency appointment (including diagnostic X-ray) is £95.
Our emergency dental services include the following:
Emergency dental treatments
Abscess
If you have an abscess your dentist will need to make a small cut in the gums to drain the infection away. Depending on the source of the infection, additional treatment may be needed such as a root canal. Your dentist can also prescribe antibiotics to help kill any remaining bacteria.
Pain relief
When you have a dental emergency, over the counter medications such as paracetamol, aspirin or ibuprofen are usually sufficient. However, our dentists can also prescribe stronger pain relief for persistent or severe pain.
Extractions
Our dentists perform emergency tooth extractions in Warrington. The tooth may need to be extracted if it has suffered severe trauma and other methods cannot save the tooth. If we do need to extract the tooth, we can also provide follow-up treatments once the area has healed to replace the tooth if required.
Reimplant
If you are dealing with a knocked out tooth, an emergency dentist may be able to reimplant the tooth. This is provided the tooth is salvageable and has been kept in milk or saliva until you arrive for your appointment.
Handling Your Dental Emergency
If you need an emergency dentist appointment, our team will provide guidance on managing your condition until you arrive at our practice.
For life-threatening situations—such as difficulty breathing or uncontrolled heavy bleeding—call 999 immediately.
Otherwise, here are some essential tips to manage a dental emergency:
- Knocked-out tooth: Hold the tooth by the crown, avoiding the roots. If possible, place it back in the socket and bite down gently on a clean cloth to secure it. If reinsertion isn’t possible, keep the tooth in milk or saliva to help preserve it.
- Uncontrolled bleeding: Apply gauze or a clean cloth to stem the bleeding.
- Swelling or abscess: Use a cold compress—wrap ice cubes in a towel and press gently against the affected area to reduce pain and swelling.
Beyond these immediate steps, consider any practical arrangements you may need, such as arranging transport to and from your appointment. Also, have any necessary medications or relevant medical information ready for your dentist.
